At Christmas time, small businesses are working harder than ever to get things ready for the shopping rush. There is so much more love and care involved when you shop small, it really does mean the world to us small makers.

Here are 5 reasons why you should consider shopping small for the holidays.

1. Small businesses prioritise quality, handcrafting individual items with a close attention to detail. This ensures that each product is durable, thoughtfully designed, and stands out from mass-produced alternatives. Every card, print, or stationery piece is created with thought and attention, meaning every purchase is truly one-of-a-kind - something you won’t find on the high street.
   
2. You will be supporting individual people with a dream, not a franchise with a profit target. And it’s not just a feel‑good factor for individuals - small businesses are a pillar of the UK economy. In 2025, there are about 5.7 million private-sector businesses, and of those approx. 5.64 million (99%!) are small businesses (0‑49 employees).

3. Small businesses tend to make more of an active effort to minimise wastefulness and are more mindful of sustainability. According to the British Business Bank’s SMEs & Net Zero Report 2025, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for about 37% of all UK business greenhouse‑gas emissions, compared to 63% from larger companies.
