There are days when life demands a little bit more of you. Not in a huge way, but maybe you have a big work call (or several smaller ones), and it can be tricky to show up with a clear, confident mind if you’re still in loungewear and feeling a bit ugh.
When it’s one of those days, I find it helpful to carve out a small pocket of time to do one or two things that help me feel a bit more put together.
Here are a few low effort ideas:
Making the bed. It’s basic but it does make everything feel slightly neater.
Brushing your teeth. Even if you’ve already done it. It’s a quick reset to feel a bit more fresh.
Washing your face and putting on moisturiser. Again, very minimal effort, but it helps you feel accomplished in a self-care kind of way.
Spraying a bit of perfume or body spray - ideally something easy to grab so you don’t have to think about it. I sometimes use a lavender spray if i’m feeling particularly anxious.
Making a hot drink in your favourite mug. Everyone has one. Mine has cartoon cats on it, which is not something I would normally go for, but it has a slightly sophisticated quirkiness about it that I’ve grown to love.

This one was a birthday gift, you can find it in Oliver Bonas
Using a cute bowl for snacks instead of whatever tupperware falls out of the cupboard first. A small thing, but it makes it feel a bit more intentional. Same with mugs. No more saving the pretty or fancy things for special occasions!
Put some flowers on your desk. When feeling overwhelmed with work it’s nice to glance over and see the happy colours. If you don’t fancy dealing with trimming and maintaining fresh flowers, I found some real-touch tulips on Etsy which you can keep forever. They are impressively realistic and great if you have kids or pets (my cats chew real flowers *eye roll*) and make a great gift as well. These are the ones I bought.

I was so impressed with these I bought some as a gift for a friend who had a baby (because what new mum wants to tend to live flowers really?)
Doing your nails, if you have the time. I’ve found it makes a small but not negligible difference to my alertness and confidence when I am in a work call and using my keyboard. Colour plays a part too - using a bold colour can help you feel empowered, while a simple nude or pale pink that looks clean and neat can help you feel put together and in control in a calm way. Or you can go with a fun, bright colour that simply makes you happy. I did these sparkly pink nails for a hen do weekend which I was feeling a bit overwhelmed about, and it made me happy whenever they caught my eye.

I don't go bold very often, but these ones made me particularly happy to look at
Longer-Lasting Nails Without the Salon Stress

I've switched to using gel polishes at home rather than standard ones. They do require a bit more time, plus a lamp, but they last for longer and can look neater, helping you avoid feeling stressed about having messy, chipped nails. And it's way cheaper to do gel nails yourself rather than go to a salon.
You need:
- Gel polish in a colour of your choice (I’ve been liking Bluesky ones, they have a nice range)
- Gel base coat & top coat
- UV lamp (you can get these more cheap and cheerful than you may think)
- Nail file
If you want to go fancy then I also recommend:
- A cuticle pusher and trimmers
- Cuticle oil - i’ve been trying this Sally Hansen one after trimming without one for too long
- Your favourite hand cream, I like The Body Shop ones
None of these ideas are groundbreaking, but together, they can take you from “eurgh” to “slightly more ok”. And sometimes, that’s enough to get you through the day.
